As 2017 draws to a close we are having a quick look back over what has been a fantastic year for the club from hitting over 100 members at freshers in September, to members completing both Iron Man 70.3 & 140.6 events and taking home a BUCS point from BUCS Duathlon in November. We would like to thank all our members for playing a part of the success, the club would be nothing without it members’ commitment, and positive attitudes; so, we are looking forward to more success in 2018!
All the way back in January, on an unseasonably warm Saturday morning, 20 members took the train to Dawlish Warren to take part in our first Beach Boot Camp Session. This was a huge success and the club has gone back several times since.
Exeter performed well throughout the spring series, with a race win from Tim Gordon at Dawlish, age group podium places from Finn Arentz and Molly Perkins, as well as 3rd overall for Ollie Thorogood at Sidmouth. The series was rounded of at Exeter Aquathlon where another 3rd overall for Ollie saw him take the overall series win for the second year running!
Majorca Training Camp
Members travelled to Majorca in April for a week of training in the sun. The group covered over 300km on the bike, amongst the many rides, they scaled Sa Calobra, one of the biggest climbs in Majorca and regarded as a Mecca for cyclists. Training also included running sessions and open water swimming along the Majorcan coastline.
BUCS Sprint Triathlon
What better way to start than BUCS Sprint. In May, we took 20 athletes to Calne for BUCS sprint triathlon. The girls did brilliantly, headed up by Ellen P-K who finished in 1:24:51, placing her 50th overall! Tim Gordon was our fastest male, coming 62nd in a time of 1:11:10. A fantastic day was had by all, fingers crossed for more success next year!
In May, Tim Gordon took part in the Donut Duathlon in Torbay, consisting of a 5k run, 15k bike ride and then another 2.5k run. Tim raced fantastically, finishing in a time of 50:49, winning the event overall!
Exe Valley Triathlon
May was a busy month with more success at the Exe Valley Triathlon. Tim Gordon and alumni, Jack Bristow battled it out with Jack eventually edging out Tim for 2nd place over all with Tim placing 3rd behind him.
Run Exe Relays
We entered 3 teams for the Run Exe Relays, they came up against some strong teams from all over the southwest. After some outstanding performances, EUTriC 1 came home in 3rd place overall! They were followed by EUTriC 2 and EUTriC Girls shortly after in 20th and 46th respectively with the girls also finishing as the 8th overall female team.
Back in May A few members headed up to Taunton to take part in the Sprint Distance triathlon and did the club proud. The highlight was Ellen P-K, who was the fastest female of the day finishing in an amazing time of 1:23:55! Becca Locke also did well, finishing 4th in the senior women’s category and Simon Jones finished 4th in the senior men’s category.
End of Season Dinner
We rounded off a fantastic season with our end of season dinner in June at On the Water Front. A massive thank you goes to Social Secs Ellen and Quang once again for organising everything and making the evening an enormous success!
We have had a fantastic fresher’s week back in September, with packed taster sessions, meet and greets, capped off by a record number of sign ups at the Freshers Squash, with membership jut tipping 100 atheletes!
We had our strongest ever showing at BUCS Duathlon this year, with a record turnout of 34 athletes, with a huge six of our athletes finishing in under 50mins! Stand out performances came from our first men’s team, Jack Bond finishing in 43:55 – 23rd place overall, Harry Preston, with a time of 44:32, and first year, Seamus Sheard, finishing in 45:25. They finishing as the 9th Men’s team overall and scoring Exeter a BUCS point! On the girls front, Captain, Ellen P-K lead from the front with a fantastic performance, finishing our highest placed girl in 53:06!
Christmas Meal & Ride
Our term was rounded off with a Christmas meal and a festive themed Sunday bike ride. Big thank you to our Social Secs, Molly and Allan for organising a fantastic evening at Coals attended by almost 60 members earlier this month. We also had a Festive Group Ride with a great turn out with some impressive costumes!
