The Exeter Tri Club Aquathlon series returned to Dawlish for the third round last Sunday. Due to this race falling during the Easter holidays there tends to be relatively few entrants from EUTriC. This was true again this year, but the three athletes we did have taking part produced great results that meant that EUTriC had a much higher profile at the race than numbers would presume.
Matt Hacke and Ollie Thorogood, who had raced at the previous Dawlish Aquathlon in February, were joined by Jack Bristow. All three were hoping to continue to build on strong results in previous races in the series as well as make the most of this last preparation race before the BUCS Sprint Triathlon three weeks later.
Matt was the first to set off. Having switched into a faster swim wave after his good result at Sidmouth, he started off a bit too hard on the swim and flagged a bit towards the end. However, unlike at Sidmouth, Matt benefited from the run route consisting of a lap around Dawlish rather than an out-and-back course. This meant that Matt not only actually completed the required distance but caught up with and passed several competitors on the run. This meant that he recorded a personal best finish of 18th overall with a time of 32:22.
Friendly competition within a team tends to encourage teammates to push themselves that little bit harder to get bragging rights over their teammate. This was exactly the case between Jack and Ollie. Jack was looking to make up for losing to Ollie at Sidmouth while Ollie, who had traveled down from Aberystwyth especially for this race, was eager to maintain his position as EUTriC’s top Aquathlete. The fact that both Ollie and Jack were pushing hard to beat each other meant that they finished 2nd and 3rd in the overall standings, with Jack just pipping Ollie by 13 seconds. On top of this, they both won their age categories meaning this was another successful race for EUTriC.
Club results are as follows:
Jack Bristow – 2nd Overall – 1st Age Group – 27:48
Ollie Thorogood – 3rd Overall – 1st Age Group – 28:01
Matt Hacke – 18th Overall – 4th Age Group – 32:22
